Self-encrypting Drives Get Certified; Trusted Computing Group to Host First Compliance Workshop May 10-11, 2016

For many enterprise IT buyers, certification is insurance against products that don’t do what they’re supposed to do in a consistent fashion. For products built using industry standards or specifications, as almost all are, certification is proof that the desired capabilities are present and that the products will be interoperable with others using those same standards or specifications. And in many sectors, ensuring a level of security is critical to their infrastructure.

Trusted Computing Group has in place two certification programs: one for the Trusted Platform Module, or TPM, and one for Trusted Network Communications, or TNC. TPM certification includes compliance testing and a security evaluation. For TNC, TCG provides test suites and interoperability testing. Products then can be submitted for official certification.

With self-encrypting drives (SEDs) based on TCG’s specifications now widely manufactured and deployed, certification for those drives now will be available. Formal certification will require compliance to test cases as verified by a TCG-certified test suite, which will be available in the near future, and a security evaluation based on the Common Criteria Full Drive Encryption (FDE) – Encryption Engine (EE) collaborative Protection Profile (cPP), located in the Data Protection section of the collaborative Protection Profiles website.

To help members utilize emerging test suites and conduct interoperability testing, TCG is hosting a compliance workshop May 10-11 in Milpitas, Calif.. While certification is open to TCG members only, non-members are invited to attend the workshop to meet manufactures of the test suites, drives and management software and to learn about membership.

In the future, members can certify their SED products via a TCG-hosted compliance workshop, a third-party lab or through self-certification.
